Thanpuying Viriya Chavakul, the lady-in-waiting to Her Majesty the Queen, has denied being the mastermind behind the attempted assassination of People's Alliance for Democracy leader Sondhi Limthongkul.
Speaking to INN news yesterday, Thanpuying Viriya insisted she had no knowledge of the plot to kill Mr Sondhi. Following the assassination attempt, Mr Sondhi said a certain lady close to the palace was one party among many who had "chipped in" to have him killed. "I'm not worried. Whoever wants to implicate me, let them. The truth is the truth. I'm just a woman without a husband who is incapable of doing anything like that to Mr Sondhi," she said. "The thought [of having Mr Sondhi killed] never crossed my mind."
Thanpuying Viriya admitted she was acquainted with military top brass because of her charity work, which included visiting frontline soldiers, and she now heads a foundation under royal patronage to care for border patrol security officers.
The Sondhi murder bid has opened up speculation that the gunmen were connected to, or part of, the security forces. Bullet casings engraved with the initials of the Royal Thai Army were collected from the shooting scene on April 17.
Thanpuying Viriya said the top brass she is close to are now retired and they are not in any active positions.
"Besides, these people don't love me enough to volunteer any kind of risky service for me," she added.
Thanpuying Viriya said she was being discredited because she had "endorsed" former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's loyalty to the monarchy.
"But this is what I believe to be true [Thaksin being loyal to the monarchy]. Everyone is entitled to their opinion," she said.
Thanpuying Viriya also denied Mr Sondhi's suggestion that she skimmed money from the sale of blue shirts, a fund-raising project to honour Her Majesty's birthday.

The story ''Thanpuying denies plotting to kill Sondhi'' published on page one of the Bangkok Post yesterday incorrectly said Thanpuying Viriya Chavakul was a lady-in-waiting to Her Majesty the Queen.
In fact, according to Thanpuying Charungjit Teekara, deputy private secretary to Her Majesty, confirmed Thanpuying Viriya has not been appointed a lady-in-waiting.
All activities and business conducted by Thanpuying Viriya, even if she has been doing such activity on acted as chairwoman of a foundation, are Thanpuying Viriya's personal affairs. They have nothing to do with the palace, Thanpuying Charungjit said.
Thanpuying Charungjit said a lady-in-waiting must be appointed by His Majesty the King and the appointment must be announced in the Royal Gazette. Thanpuying Viriya also holds no position in the Bureau of the Royal Household, Thanpuying Charungjit said.

Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit made a request through the department of private secretary of the Queen to the permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry and the governors throughout the country to stop selling of T-shirts with her Majesty's initials "S.K." by circular notices to (force) the bureaucrats and officers of all levels to buy them. HRH the Queen was very much sorry after receiving several complaining petitions informing about the burdens to the low-income people."
A News reported from the Interior Ministry revealed that the Office of the Royal Secretariat issued most urgent letters dated April 26, 2004 to all provincial governors saying that the department of private secretary of Her Majesty the Queen had issued a letter to the permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry dated April 23, 2004 about the selling of light blue T-shirts with her Majesty's initials "S.K." embroidered. The letter from the department of private secretary of Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit to the permanent secretary of the Interior Ministry was signed by the lady Charungjit Teekara, deputy private secretary to Her Majesty.
The message was that bureaucrats and offices in the Interior Ministry as well as people in general submitted petitions complaining to Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit about the selling by Nopparaj Ratanakosin foundation of light blue T-shirts at the price of 400 baht each. The distribution was through three channels, i.e., the Interior Ministry (received 1 million shirts), the National Saving Bank (received 1 million shirts) and the Krung Thai Bank (received 1 million shirts).
In your offices, the sale was carried out by circular letters to (force) bureaucrats and officers at all levels to buy the shirts which caused utmost sufferings to the low-income people. Moreover, there were a rush to finish the sale before August 2004. The Nopparaj Ratanakosin foundation is presided by the lady Wiriya Chawakul who also presides the production of the T-shirts with the embroidered initials "S.K.72 years", She had requested a Royal permission to make two million shirts which were granted. Usually, the requests for Royal permission to achieve a charitable donations into the Royal charity projects are almost always granted with a view that the donations projects are appropriate and righteous without troubling people.
Now that through several petitions, the sufferings from the selling of light blue T-shirts with her Majesty's initials "S.K." embroidered.have been acknowledged by Her Majesty the Queen, Her Majesty is very much sorry. Therefore, she requested to you and all involved to immediately stop the methods of (force) sale which would bother people. The sale of the shirts are to be by voluntary methods only.

The lady Wiriya has been receiving large amount of donations from Thaksin which she happily welcomes no matter it is clean or not. She used to be sarcastic, complaining why no clean people make such donations.
Lately, during Thaksin's campaign in the begining of 2009 into April with obvious and direct attacks against the President of the Privy Council, Gen.Prem, it was the lady Wiriya who strongly gurantees that Thaksin is loyal to the Monarchy, claiming her sixth sense had told her so.
